As always some great tips. My additions/revisions would be: -
Timing is crucial so ask how long they (the buyer)expects the presentation to be and how long for questions.
Make sure a member of the contract delivery team is there and let him/her answer appropriate questions

Cheers

Welcome news indeed for SMEs up and down the land. Regarding the need for multiple accreditations, it would be hoped that the Government is aware of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the movement for reducing duplication. Unfortunately, successive Governments have all too frequently introduced their own standards for procurement purposes, when all was required was to introduce internationally recognised standards like ISO 9001. Let's hope Mr Cable and his colleagues embrace such easy simplification of the Government system.

'Answer all the questions' - so important.
In feedback from a recent tender I was told I had scored 40 /160 for answering a question with 'not applicable'.
I would have scored higher if I'd put "we don't feel as though this is required but would look at it if we were to get the contract" or even a reason why it was not applicable.
It really is a point scoring exercise and a difficult balance between giving a clear concise answer and enough information to score points.

Quite often the case might not be about SME's struggling to get around the process but further down the chain - the procurment officers who are making the decisions, and in light of the situation and pending public sector cuts the procurement offices/managers will be even more reluctant to take risks with SME's - even if this initiative is well intended.

It will be interesting to see if such a 'fair-y tale' can really happen. The whole tendering process needs completely overhauling to make it fairer for SMEs, as it has become a complete exercise in having good writing skills and all the accreditations rather than focussing on the actual work to be carried out.

Sorry Paul, no idea. But beware, there is no such thing as a template for RFIs as they are often very different and so cannot be generically made into a template.

However, an individual business should build up a library to help deal with RFIs, PQQs, tenders etc.

If there are no specific questions to respond to, then it is essentially a proposal. For this you might find something you can adapt.

NB we'll be posting a blog on writing proposals sometime soon.

Hi Jackie

If you are trying to find tender opportunities then supply2.gov is a good start as they show the 'low value' contracts. However you may also find leads by networking, word of mouth and by contacting schools in your area.

Then double-check that it's right - see Win More Tenders by Qualifying (Part 1)

Once you decided to go ahead, the rest of this site has some good tips eg how to respond to tenders

Good luck!

Regards
